Welcome to Journey to Enlightenment: A Multimedia Exhibition on Buddhist Cultural Heritage. This exhibition offers an immersive, research-based exploration of Buddhist history and thought, tracing its development over more than 2,500 years―from its origins in South Asia to its continued expression in contemporary practice. As you move through the exhibition, you will encounter eight thematic sections, each centered on a major Buddhist site. Together, they trace how the Dharma has been articulated across different contexts―through architecture, sculpture, text, and ritual―and how it continues to inform ways of seeing and acting in the world today. Co-curated by the Tzu Chi Foundation and Harvard FAS CAMLab, the exhibition brings together art historical research and advanced digital technologies. Through immersive projection, spatial audio, and high-resolution digital reconstruction, it reconfigures geographically distant sites into a shared experiential environment. What emerges is not only a history of Buddhist art, but a larger inquiry: how does the Dharma move beyond text and image to become a way of understanding the world? And how does it continue to take form through awareness, compassion, and action today? As you begin, we invite you to slow down. Let your attention settle. 01｜四門四方：菩提迦耶

You are now entering Bodh Gaya, located in present-day India, which is widely recognized as the place where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree. Within Buddhist traditions, this site marks more than a single event. It represents a fundamental inquiry into the nature of human existence. Birth, aging, illness, and death are understood as shared conditions of life. The Buddha's awakening emerges from direct engagement with this reality. This section introduces the narrative of the "four gates." According to tradition, the young Siddhartha encountered old age, sickness, death, and a renunciant―experiences that prompted a profound shift in his understanding of the world. In this context, the "gates" can be understood not only as physical thresholds, but as moments of perception—points at which the nature of reality becomes newly visible. The historical site itself reflects this significance. The Mahabodhi Temple complex, with origins tracing back to the Mauryan period under Emperor Ashoka, preserves key symbolic elements such as the Vajrasana, or "Diamond Throne." These material forms anchor the memory of enlightenment in space, translating an abstract philosophical insight into a place that can be visited, perceived, and revisited over time. Within this exhibition, Bodh Gaya is not seen only as a site in India from more than two thousand years ago. It also resonates across time and distance with contemporary humanitarian efforts. You will see images reflecting the origins of Tzu Chi, illustrating how Master Cheng Yen's path likewise began with an act of seeing. When she encountered people living in poverty and illness, compassion did not remain simply an inner feeling, but became a concrete vow expressed through sustained action. This movement, from recognizing suffering to forming a vow and putting it into practice, echoes the Buddha's own awakening beneath the Bodhi tree. As you stand here, Bodh Gaya may be understood not only as a historical origin, but as a conceptual beginning―a moment to truly recognize suffering, see impermanence, and awaken to our own responsibilities. All change begins with one profound moment that continues to unfold.

Bodh Gaya — Enlightenment and the Origin of Awakening

02｜鹿野宣法：鹿野苑

Now, please move to the second section. This space introduces Sarnath, also known as Deer Park, located near Varanasi in India, where the Buddha delivered his first teaching following enlightenment, known as the "Turning of the Wheel of Dharma," transforming personal realization into a form that can be communicated, learned, and practiced. Historically, Sarnath developed into a major center of Buddhist teaching and pilgrimage, particularly during the Gupta period. Sculptural traditions associated with the site, especially images of the Buddha in dharmachakra mudrā, visually articulate the act of teaching. These statues with their serene expressions, harmonious proportions, and delicate drapery that seemingly vanishes into the body, present an aesthetic that is introverted, transcendent, and profoundly spiritual. These works are more than artistic treasures; they are vital evidence of how the Dharma was visualized and entered public memory. Archaeological remains, including stupas and monastic complexes, continue to reflect its long-standing significance. Within the exhibition, Sarnath also points to the conditions under which the Dharma continues to circulate. Its transmission does not depend solely on monumental spaces, but on the ongoing relationship between teaching and practice. This carries a direct, contemporary echo to Luye Township in Taiwan—a name that literally translates to "Deer Park." It was here, in her youth, that Master Cheng Yen shared the Dharma with local villagers under the trees. There were no magnificent halls or elevated pulpits, but rather a profoundly simple spirit: the Dharma need not be suspended on high; it is meant to be lived out directly among the people. This section emphasizes that the Dharma is sustained not only through articulation, but through enactment—through the ways in which it is taken up and lived. Ultimately, the true power of the Dharma lies not in the words themselves. The wheel of the Dharma continues to turn because those who hear it are willing to change the direction of their own lives.

Sarnath — The Turning of the Wheel of Dharma

03｜法華精神：法華藝術

Now, please proceed to the next section. This space explores how Buddhist teachings are translated into physical and spatial form, focusing on traditions associated with the Lotus Sutra. This sutra holds a profoundly important place in East Asian Buddhist history. It expresses the core spirit of Mahayana Buddhism: all sentient beings possess Buddha-nature, and everyone can attain Buddhahood. Crucially, it teaches that the path to awakening lies not in escaping the world, but in entering deeply among sentient beings and vowing to practice the Way. Across sites such as the Xiangtangshan Caves, dating to the Northern Qi dynasty in the 6th century, scripture is not only preserved in written form, but embedded within architecture itself. Inscriptions, sculptural programs, and spatial arrangements work together to create environments where doctrine is experienced rather than simply read. Here, text, image, and space function as an integrated system. Passages from the Lotus Sutra and its prologue, the Sutra of Infinite Meanings, are carved directly into stone, while surrounding sculptural compositions give visual form to key ideas. The cave becomes more than a container for religious objects. It becomes a medium for thought. In this context, Buddhist teaching is not confined to language alone. It unfolds through movement, perception, and embodied experience. To enter such a space is to engage with doctrine spatially, through proximity, orientation, and attention. Within this exhibition, these artworks are juxtaposed with the work of Tzu Chi volunteers to illustrate a vital contemporary dimension: a sutra is not merely meant to be recited, but a way of life. In this modern practice, engaging with texts like the Sutra of Infinite Meanings and the Lotus Sutra is a process of transforming the Dharma into medical care, disaster relief, education, and humanistic action. In other words, the true completion of the scriptures happens not between the pages, but in the footsteps of people. This section invites you to look at these artworks in a new light. They are not simply static legacies of ancient religious art, but living evidence of how the Dharma enters daily life. Every image, every passage, and every vow ultimately asks the same question: when we understand the suffering of the world, are we willing to respond with compassion and wisdom? Every person willing to practice kindness is a modern-day continuation of these sutras.

Lotus Sutra Traditions — Scripture, Image, and Spatial Practice

現在，我們進入第四單元。這裡所展開的，是東亞佛教中最廣為人知，也最深入人心的慈悲形象：觀世音菩薩。 千手千眼，從來不只是宗教想像中的奇觀。它之所以能夠長久感動人心，是因為這一形象精準地回應了人類對慈悲最根本的期待：在痛苦來臨之時，有人看見；在呼求發出之時，有人伸手。 在佛教經典中，觀世音菩薩是「聞聲救苦」的化身。《法華經・普門品》強調觀音的應化能力：應以何身得度者，即現何身而為說法。這種不執著單一形象、而能隨因緣應現的特質，構成了大乘佛教慈悲觀的重要核心。慈悲，不是高高在上的施予，而是對具體處境的理解，對眾生需要的即時回應。 從圖像學角度來看，千手千眼觀音在中國與東亞的發展，展現出宗教藝術高度成熟的象徵系統。手，代表行動；眼，代表觀照。千手與千眼合而為一，意味著真正的慈悲，既不是盲目的熱情，也不是冷靜的旁觀，而是既能看見苦難，又能付諸行動的智慧與能力。 而在本展中，觀音信仰並不只被理解為傳統宗教圖像。它同時也是一種當代社會實踐的隱喻。 慈濟長年所建立的全球志工網絡，某種意義上，正是一種現代版的千手千眼。當災難發生時，總有人第一時間趕赴現場；當社區中有孤老、病苦與貧困時，總有人默默探訪與陪伴。這些行動之所以動人，不在於神蹟般的壯觀，而在於一雙雙真實的手，和一雙雙願意看見他人苦難的眼睛。 因此，這一單元邀請我們重新理解「觀音」。觀音不只是被膜拜的對象，也是一種人間可以實踐的倫理理想。當一個人願意傾聽、願意靠近、願意伸手，那一刻，慈悲就不再只是宗教語言，而成為可被活出的生命姿態。 也許，真正的問題不是：觀音在哪裡？而是：當別人的苦難出現在眼前時，我們是否願意成為那一隻手，那一雙眼？

04｜千手千眼：觀音信仰

You are now entering a section centered on Avalokiteśvara, known in East Asia as Guanyin, the bodhisattva associated with compassion. In Buddhist tradition, Guanyin is understood as one who perceives the suffering of the world and responds to it. The Universal Gateway chapter of the Lotus Sutra emphasizes this profound adaptability: Guanyin appears in whatever form is needed to deliver sentient beings. This flexibility is not a detached bestowal of grace, but a deeply attuned, immediate response to concrete human needs. This section draws on the example of the Guanyin Pavilion at Dule Temple, constructed in 984 during the Liao dynasty. At its center stands a monumental Eleven-Headed Guanyin, one of the largest surviving clay sculptures of its kind. The multiple heads suggest an expanded capacity to perceive suffering from many perspectives. While this specific figure takes the eleven-headed form, the broader East Asian iconographic tradition pushes this concept even further into the image of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin. From an iconographic perspective, this represents a highly mature symbolic system. The hands represent action; the eyes represent observation. The integration of a thousand hands and a thousand eyes implies that true compassion is the wisdom and ability to both see suffering and take immediate action. Within the broader framework of the exhibition, this belief in Guanyin is not only understood through traditional religious imagery but as a metaphor for contemporary social practice. Tzu Chi's global volunteer network is featured here as one modern manifestation of these thousand hands and thousand eyes. When disaster strikes, someone is there on the front lines; when there is loneliness, illness, or poverty, someone is there to visit and offer comfort. These actions are carried out by real, reaching hands and eyes willing to see the suffering of others. Therefore, this section invites us to redefine Guanyin. Guanyin is not only an object of devotion, but also a model for practice—a lived ethical ideal. Perhaps the real question is not "Where is Guanyin?" but rather, "When the suffering of others appears before us, are we willing to become that reaching hand and those seeing eyes?"

05｜捨身救度：敦煌石窟

Please continue forward. In this section, you enter Dunhuang and the profound spiritual heart of Buddhist Jātaka stories. The Mogao Caves are more than a site of art—they are a visual scripture spanning a thousand years. Murals, sculptures, spatial design, and narratives together form one of the most complete ancient Buddhist image universes. Among these, Jātaka tales stand out, showing not Buddha's post-enlightenment grandeur, but his repeated acts of compassion through body and life during his long spiritual journey. Cave 254, carved during the late Northern Wei period in the fifth century, is one of the earliest and most representative caves at Dunhuang. Its murals unfold sequentially along the walls, drawing the viewer step by step into the story. Tales like self-sacrifice for a tiger and offering flesh for a pigeon depict giving at the highest level—not just material offerings, but the body itself as a means to save others. From a Buddhist perspective, these narratives go beyond praising sacrifice—they represent a profound transcendence of self. True giving is letting go of self-centeredness; true compassion is taking on the suffering of others, even transforming one's own life into a source of salvation. The exhibition draws a parallel to modern ethical practice. As seen through Tzu Chi's advocacy for marrow, organ, and body donation, the spirit of self-offering continues to find deep relevance in contemporary contexts. The concept of the "silent mentor" invites reflection: can the end of life become the beginning of learning and renewal for others? Here, the body is not only personal—it can be a tool for the benefit of all beings. Standing in this section, you may sense a quiet yet intense power: even amid unavoidable suffering, one can choose how to respond. One of the greatest responses is letting one's own existence support the continuation of others' lives. The Dunhuang murals show compassion carved in stone; today, it is enacted in living deeds.

Dunhuang — Self-Sacrifice and the Ethics of Giving

現在，我們來到第六單元。請將目光交給眼前的空間層次與敘事節奏，因為您即將進入的，是一條關於學習、行走與相遇的修行之路。 婆羅浮屠，位於印尼中爪哇，是世界上規模最大、也最具宇宙象徵意義的佛教建築之一。它建於八至九世紀，融合當地建築傳統與大乘佛教宇宙觀，整體結構由下而上展開，猶如一部可步行的佛教經典。人在繞塔而行的過程中，不只是觀看浮雕，也是在身體移動中經歷一場修行的上升。 其中極具代表性的敘事之一，便是《華嚴經・入法界品》中的善財童子五十三參。善財童子在文殊菩薩引導下，依次參訪五十三位善知識，他們來自不同階層、不同職業、不同生命處境：有比丘、國王、商人、醫者、婦人、童子，也有神祇與菩薩。這一連串參學過程說明了一個極其重要的佛教觀念——智慧，不只存在於單一權威之中，而散布於整個法界；修行，也不只發生在寺院之內，而在一切關係與相遇之中展開。 這一思想的學術意義十分深遠。《華嚴經》所揭示的，是一種高度關聯性的世界觀：一切存在彼此成就、互為條件，沒有任何個體能夠孤立完成自身。因此，學習並不是向上仰望，而是走向世界；菩薩道也不是脫離眾生，而是藉由眾生完成自己。 本展將這一精神與慈濟志工群體相互映照，十分自然。慈濟的實踐者來自各行各業：醫師、教師、司機、企業家、農人、家庭主婦、青年學生。每個人都在各自的位置上承擔責任，也在彼此陪伴與合作中，學習如何成為更有智慧、更有悲心的人。這種群體性的共學與共行，正是現代社會中一種活生生的「五十三參」。 所以，在這一單元中，您所感受到的，不只是古代佛教建築的宏偉，更是一種修行觀的轉變：真正的道場，不一定遠在他方；真正的善知識，也不一定披袈裟、坐高座。 也許，每一位與您相遇的人，都可能是生命中的一位老師。而每一次理解他人、與他人共事、向他人學習的時刻，其實都在延續善財童子的參學之路。

06｜五十三參：婆羅浮屠

You are now entering a section dedicated to Borobudur, in present-day Indonesia. Pay attention to the layers of space and the rhythm of the narrative, because you are about to enter a path of learning, walking, and encountering. Borobudur in Central Java, Indonesia, is the world's largest Buddhist monument and an expression of Mahāyāna cosmology. Built in the 8th–9th centuries, its structure rises from base to top like a walkable Buddhist text. Moving around the monument, the visitor not only observes reliefs but undergoes a physical ascent, a journey of practice. A key narrative is the "Sudhana's Fifty-Three Visits to Spiritual Guides, or kalyāņamitras" from the Avatamsaka Sutra. Individuals come from every walk of life: doctors, teachers, drivers, entrepreneurs, farmers, homemakers, and students. Each assumes responsibility in their sphere, learning together through support and cooperation. This living "Fifty-Three Visits" demonstrates collective growth in the modern world. In this section, you experience not just architectural grandeur, but a shift in the understanding of practice: the true sacred place is not distant, and a true teacher may not wear robes or sit on a high seat. Every person you meet can be a teacher, and each moment of understanding or cooperation continues Sudhana's journey.

Borobudur — Pilgrimage, Pedagogy, and Cosmology

07｜法界正果：應縣木塔

We now enter the seventh section, where we reflect on a profound question: Is the completion of practice an individual achievement or a collective fulfillment? The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also called the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, stands in Shanxi, China. Built in 1056 CE during the Liao dynasty, it is the tallest and oldest surviving all-wood pagoda in the world. Despite centuries of earthquakes, war, and natural wear, it remains standing. Architecturally, it is both a masterpiece of Buddhist design and a pinnacle of timber engineering, demonstrating advanced structural techniques without the use of nails. In Buddhist culture, a pagoda is more than a building. It symbolizes the Buddha's body, holds the Dharma, and embodies the accumulation of merit. In the context of the Lotus Sutra, the emergence of a treasure pagoda represents the revelation of true Dharma and the opening of awakening for all beings. This idea is beautifully illustrated through Indra's Net, a metaphor for the interconnectedness of existence. Each jewel reflects all others, infinite yet harmonized. No being exists in isolation; each is realized through relationships, and every action contributes to the realization of others. Tzu Chi's global network of volunteers reflects this living web. Each volunteer, site, and act of aid may seem separate, yet together they resonate and support one another. When disaster strikes, a single compassionate thought can ripple outward, mobilizing collective action. As you stand in this section, facing the pagoda and its metaphor, notice how it invites reflection. Here, architecture becomes a form of thought, showing how abstract ideas such as relationality and mutual dependence can be expressed in physical structure. It reminds us that every act, no matter how small, contributes to a larger, shared realization.

Yingxian Wooden Pagoda — Interdependence and Structural Thought

Vulture Peak, historically a key site of the Buddha's teachings and Mahāyāna texts such as the Lotus Sutra, represents a spiritual height and an expansive cosmological vision. Here, the exhibition pairs Vulture Peak with the stars, creating a contemporary narrative turn: the Dharma is not only past or located at historical sites—it can meet the future, technology, and new modes of perception. Buddhist texts describe: "The mind embraces the infinite, its measure spans the realms." This is more than rhetoric—it is a philosophy of life. When one's mind extends beyond self, compassion reaches the wider world. In Tzu Chi's sixty years of practice, this expansion is realized through local charity, international aid, medical care, education, humanistic values, and sustainable initiatives. Compassion adapts, finding new language and paths. The exhibition embodies this spirit. CAMLab's digital technology and research merge with Buddhist sites and Tzu Chi practice, making the Dharma a living cultural force. This final section invites you to imagine: if your heart could expand, and your vows could extend further, how would you relate to the world? 鹿野宣法：鹿野苑

This space introduces Sarnath, also known as Deer Park, located near Varanasi in India, where the Buddha delivered his first teaching following enlightenment, known as the "Turning of the Wheel of Dharma," transforming personal realization into a form that can be communicated, learned, and practiced. Historically, Sarnath developed into a major center of Buddhist teaching and pilgrimage, particularly during the Gupta period. Sculptural traditions associated with the site, especially images of the Buddha in dharmachakra mudrā, visually articulate the act of teaching. These statues with their serene expressions, harmonious proportions, and delicate drapery that seemingly vanishes into the body, present an aesthetic that is introverted, transcendent, and profoundly spiritual. These works are more than artistic treasures; they are vital evidence of how the Dharma was visualized and entered public memory. Archaeological remains, including stupas and monastic complexes, continue to reflect its long-standing significance. Within the exhibition, Sarnath also points to the conditions under which the Dharma continues to circulate. Its transmission does not depend solely on monumental spaces, but on the ongoing relationship between teaching and practice. This carries a direct, contemporary echo to Luye Township in Taiwan—a name that literally translates to "Deer Park." It was here, in her youth, that Master Cheng Yen shared the Dharma with local villagers under the trees. There were no magnificent halls or elevated pulpits, but rather a profoundly simple spirit: the Dharma need not be suspended on high; it is meant to be lived out directly among the people. This section emphasizes that the Dharma is sustained not only through articulation, but through enactment—through the ways in which it is taken up and lived. Ultimately, the true power of the Dharma lies not in the words themselves. The wheel of the Dharma continues to turn because those who hear it are willing to change the direction of their own lives.

This space explores how Buddhist teachings are translated into physical and spatial form, focusing on traditions associated with the Lotus Sutra. This sutra holds a profoundly important place in East Asian Buddhist history. It expresses the core spirit of Mahayana Buddhism: all sentient beings possess Buddha-nature, and everyone can attain Buddhahood. Crucially, it teaches that the path to awakening lies not in escaping the world, but in entering deeply among sentient beings and vowing to practice the Way. Across sites such as the Xiangtangshan Caves, dating to the Northern Qi dynasty in the 6th century, scripture is not only preserved in written form, but embedded within architecture itself. Inscriptions, sculptural programs, and spatial arrangements work together to create environments where doctrine is experienced rather than simply read. Here, text, image, and space function as an integrated system. Passages from the Lotus Sutra and its prologue, the Sutra of Infinite Meanings, are carved directly into stone, while surrounding sculptural compositions give visual form to key ideas. The cave becomes more than a container for religious objects. It becomes a medium for thought. In this context, Buddhist teaching is not confined to language alone. It unfolds through movement, perception, and embodied experience. To enter such a space is to engage with doctrine spatially, through proximity, orientation, and attention. Within this exhibition, these artworks are juxtaposed with the work of Tzu Chi volunteers to illustrate a vital contemporary dimension: a sutra is not merely meant to be recited, but a way of life. In this modern practice, engaging with texts like the Sutra of Infinite Meanings and the Lotus Sutra is a process of transforming the Dharma into medical care, disaster relief, education, and humanistic action. In other words, the true completion of the scriptures happens not between the pages, but in the footsteps of people. This section invites you to look at these artworks in a new light. They are not simply static legacies of ancient religious art, but living evidence of how the Dharma enters daily life. Every image, every passage, and every vow ultimately asks the same question: when we understand the suffering of the world, are we willing to respond with compassion and wisdom? Every person willing to practice kindness is a modern-day continuation of these sutras.

捨身救度：敦煌石窟

In this section, you enter Dunhuang and the profound spiritual heart of Buddhist Jātaka stories. The Mogao Caves are more than a site of art—they are a visual scripture spanning a thousand years. Murals, sculptures, spatial design, and narratives together form one of the most complete ancient Buddhist image universes. Among these, Jātaka tales stand out, showing not Buddha's post-enlightenment grandeur, but his repeated acts of compassion through body and life during his long spiritual journey. Cave 254, carved during the late Northern Wei period in the fifth century, is one of the earliest and most representative caves at Dunhuang. Its murals unfold sequentially along the walls, drawing the viewer step by step into the story. Tales like self-sacrifice for a tiger and offering flesh for a pigeon depict giving at the highest level—not just material offerings, but the body itself as a means to save others. From a Buddhist perspective, these narratives go beyond praising sacrifice—they represent a profound transcendence of self. True giving is letting go of self-centeredness; true compassion is taking on the suffering of others, even transforming one's own life into a source of salvation. The exhibition draws a parallel to modern ethical practice. As seen through Tzu Chi's advocacy for marrow, organ, and body donation, the spirit of self-offering continues to find deep relevance in contemporary contexts. The concept of the "silent mentor" invites reflection: can the end of life become the beginning of learning and renewal for others? Here, the body is not only personal—it can be a tool for the benefit of all beings. Standing in this section, you may sense a quiet yet intense power: even amid unavoidable suffering, one can choose how to respond. One of the greatest responses is letting one's own existence support the continuation of others' lives. The Dunhuang murals show compassion carved in stone; today, it is enacted in living deeds.

這裡所展開的，是東亞佛教中最廣為人知，也最深入人心的慈悲形象：觀世音菩薩。 千手千眼，從來不只是宗教想像中的奇觀。它之所以能夠長久感動人心，是因為這一形象精準地回應了人類對慈悲最根本的期待：在痛苦來臨之時，有人看見；在呼求發出之時，有人伸手。 在佛教經典中，觀世音菩薩是「聞聲救苦」的化身。《法華經・普門品》強調觀音的應化能力：應以何身得度者，即現何身而為說法。這種不執著單一形象、而能隨因緣應現的特質，構成了大乘佛教慈悲觀的重要核心。慈悲，不是高高在上的施予，而是對具體處境的理解，對眾生需要的即時回應。 從圖像學角度來看，千手千眼觀音在中國與東亞的發展，展現出宗教藝術高度成熟的象徵系統。手，代表行動；眼，代表觀照。千手與千眼合而為一，意味著真正的慈悲，既不是盲目的熱情，也不是冷靜的旁觀，而是既能看見苦難，又能付諸行動的智慧與能力。 而在本展中，觀音信仰並不只被理解為傳統宗教圖像。它同時也是一種當代社會實踐的隱喻。 慈濟長年所建立的全球志工網絡，某種意義上，正是一種現代版的千手千眼。當災難發生時，總有人第一時間趕赴現場；當社區中有孤老、病苦與貧困時，總有人默默探訪與陪伴。這些行動之所以動人，不在於神蹟般的壯觀，而在於一雙雙真實的手，和一雙雙願意看見他人苦難的眼睛。 因此，這一單元邀請我們重新理解「觀音」。觀音不只是被膜拜的對象，也是一種人間可以實踐的倫理理想。當一個人願意傾聽、願意靠近、願意伸手，那一刻，慈悲就不再只是宗教語言，而成為可被活出的生命姿態。 也許，真正的問題不是：觀音在哪裡？而是：當別人的苦難出現在眼前時，我們是否願意成為那一隻手，那一雙眼？

千手千眼：觀音信仰

請將目光交給眼前的空間層次與敘事節奏，因為您即將進入的，是一條關於學習、行走與相遇的修行之路。 婆羅浮屠，位於印尼中爪哇，是世界上規模最大、也最具宇宙象徵意義的佛教建築之一。它建於八至九世紀，融合當地建築傳統與大乘佛教宇宙觀，整體結構由下而上展開，猶如一部可步行的佛教經典。人在繞塔而行的過程中，不只是觀看浮雕，也是在身體移動中經歷一場修行的上升。 其中極具代表性的敘事之一，便是《華嚴經・入法界品》中的善財童子五十三參。善財童子在文殊菩薩引導下，依次參訪五十三位善知識，他們來自不同階層、不同職業、不同生命處境：有比丘、國王、商人、醫者、婦人、童子，也有神祇與菩薩。這一連串參學過程說明了一個極其重要的佛教觀念——智慧，不只存在於單一權威之中，而散布於整個法界；修行，也不只發生在寺院之內，而在一切關係與相遇之中展開。 這一思想的學術意義十分深遠。《華嚴經》所揭示的，是一種高度關聯性的世界觀：一切存在彼此成就、互為條件，沒有任何個體能夠孤立完成自身。因此，學習並不是向上仰望，而是走向世界；菩薩道也不是脫離眾生，而是藉由眾生完成自己。 本展將這一精神與慈濟志工群體相互映照，十分自然。慈濟的實踐者來自各行各業：醫師、教師、司機、企業家、農人、家庭主婦、青年學生。每個人都在各自的位置上承擔責任，也在彼此陪伴與合作中，學習如何成為更有智慧、更有悲心的人。這種群體性的共學與共行，正是現代社會中一種活生生的「五十三參」。 所以，在這一單元中，您所感受到的，不只是古代佛教建築的宏偉，更是一種修行觀的轉變：真正的道場，不一定遠在他方；真正的善知識，也不一定披袈裟、坐高座。 也許，每一位與您相遇的人，都可能是生命中的一位老師。而每一次理解他人、與他人共事、向他人學習的時刻，其實都在延續善財童子的參學之路。

五十三參：婆羅浮屠

You are now entering a section dedicated to Borobudur, in present-day Indonesia. Pay attention to the layers of space and the rhythm of the narrative, because you are about to enter a path of learning, walking, and encountering. Borobudur in Central Java, Indonesia, is the world's largest Buddhist monument and an expression of Mahāyāna cosmology. Built in the 8th–9th centuries, its structure rises from base to top like a walkable Buddhist text. Moving around the monument, the visitor not only observes reliefs but undergoes a physical ascent, a journey of practice. A key narrative is the "Sudhana's Fifty-Three Visits to Spiritual Guides, or kalyāņamitras" from the Avatamsaka Sutra. Guided by Manjushri, Sudhana visits fifty-three teachers of diverse ranks and professions—monks, kings, merchants, doctors, women, children, and even deities and bodhisattvas. This illustrates a vital Buddhist concept: wisdom is not concentrated in a single authority but spread throughout the dharma; practice unfolds not only in temples but in all relationships and encounters. This reflects a highly relational worldview: all beings co-arise, and no individual achieves fulfillment in isolation. Learning is engagement with the world, and the bodhisattva path is realized through others. Tzu Chi volunteers mirror this spirit. Individuals come from every walk of life: doctors, teachers, drivers, entrepreneurs, farmers, homemakers, students. Each assumes responsibility in their sphere, learning together through support and cooperation. This living "Fifty-Three Visits" demonstrates collective growth in the modern world. In this section, you experience not just architectural grandeur, but a shift in the understanding of practice: the true sacred place is not distant, and a true teacher may not wear robes or sit on a high seat. Every person you meet can be a teacher, and each moment of understanding or cooperation continues Sudhana's journey.

在這裡，展覽將帶您思考一個更宏觀、也更深層的命題：修行的完成，究竟是個人的成就，還是群體的共成？ 應縣木塔，也就是佛宮寺釋迦塔，位於中國山西，建於遼代，是現存世界上最高、最古老的全木構佛塔之一。這座木塔歷經地震、戰火與歲月侵蝕，依然屹立不倒。從建築史角度來看，它不僅是佛教建築藝術的傑作，也是中國木構技術與結構智慧的高峰。 但在佛教文化中，塔的意義遠不止於建築本身。塔，是佛身的象徵，是法的容器，也是功德的累積體。尤其在《法華經》的語境裡，「寶塔湧出」象徵真實法的顯現，意味著法界被喚醒、眾生成佛的可能性被打開。 本單元特別借用《華嚴經》中「帝釋珠網」的思想，來理解應縣木塔與慈濟志業之間的對應。所謂帝釋珠網，是佛教對宇宙關係性的經典譬喻：無數明珠彼此映照，一珠中含萬珠，萬珠中現一珠，重重無盡，無礙圓融。這個譬喻揭示了一種非常深刻的世界觀——沒有任何存在是孤立的，每個個體都在關係中被成就，也在成就關係本身。 若將這一思想放回眼前的展覽脈絡，您會發現：慈濟所形成的全球志工網絡，正像一張活的珠網。每一位志工、每一處據點、每一場援助，看似分散，實則彼此感應、互相支撐。災難發生時，一地有苦，萬方回應；一念悲心發動，無數人隨之共振。 這也讓我們重新理解「成果」的意義。所謂正果，不一定是某一個人的圓滿，而是眾人願力彼此交織之後，所形成的共同完成。應縣木塔之所以屹立，不只是因為某一根樑柱，而是因為所有結構彼此咬合、相互支撐。同樣地，人間的慈悲網絡之所以成立，也不只是因為少數英雄人物，而是因為無數平凡之人願意共同承擔。 當您站在這一單元，面對塔的形象與網絡的隱喻，也許可以安靜地想一想：在這張龐大的世界之網中，我們是否也能成為一顆願意發光的珠子？也許，真正讓世界穩固的，不只是制度與結構，更是那一顆顆願意互相映照、彼此成全的心。

法界正果：應縣木塔

We reflect on a profound question: Is the completion of practice an individual achievement or a collective fulfillment? The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also called the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, stands in Shanxi, China. Built in 1056 CE during the Liao dynasty, it is the tallest and oldest surviving all-wood pagoda in the world. Despite centuries of earthquakes, war, and natural wear, it remains standing. Architecturally, it is both a masterpiece of Buddhist design and a pinnacle of timber engineering, demonstrating advanced structural techniques without the use of nails. In Buddhist culture, a pagoda is more than a building. It symbolizes the Buddha's body, holds the Dharma, and embodies the accumulation of merit. In the context of the Lotus Sutra, the emergence of a treasure pagoda represents the revelation of true Dharma and the opening of awakening for all beings. This idea is beautifully illustrated through Indra's Net, a metaphor for the interconnectedness of existence. Each jewel reflects all others, infinite yet harmonized. No being exists in isolation; each is realized through relationships, and every action contributes to the realization of others. Tzu Chi's global network of volunteers reflects this living web. Each volunteer, site, and act of aid may seem separate, yet together they resonate and support one another. When disaster strikes, a single compassionate thought can ripple outward, mobilizing collective action. As you stand in this section, facing the pagoda and its metaphor, notice how it invites reflection. Here, architecture becomes a form of thought, showing how abstract ideas such as relationality and mutual dependence can be expressed in physical structure. It reminds us that every act, no matter how small, contributes to a larger, shared realization.

未來天際：靈峰星辰
